Truly one of the best vintage jewellery collections in London.
We had the most wonderful experience buying my vintage engagement ring from Berganza.
Fantastic experience buying an engagement ring. Would highly recommend. Berganza has the best collection of antique rings to choose from.
In contrast to the romantic curves of Victorian and Art Nouveau rings, an Art Deco ring is defined by bold, clean, geometric lines, often described as architectural in structure. They were almost exclusively handcrafted in platinum, a metal whose use had been pioneered in the Edwardian period before. Platinum's strength permitted finer, more daring settings than gold could support, inspiring the channel and invisible settings.
With these new techniques came the calibré cut, small gemstones precisely shaped to fit the contours of these new settings, creating the illusion of unbroken colour and concealing the metalwork entirely. An Art Deco ring places the gemstone at the centre of attention, often elevating a single coloured stone, with diamonds, baguettes and calibré-cut accents arranged in disciplined symmetry around it.
A myriad of distinctive ring designs recur throughout the Art Deco period, many of which we showcase in our collection.
An Art Deco engagement ring from the 1920s–1930s offers a combination of historic design, hand craftsmanship, and provenance that no modern ring can replicate. The perfect geometric balance of the period suits a single focal stone, in striking contrast to the surrounding gems. Whether you're looking for a delicate solitaire or a bold cluster, there are many beautiful styles to choose from.
Pieces from this period preserve a finite supply of old-mine gemstones, from Colombian emeralds, Burmese rubies, and Kashmir or Ceylon sapphires, the mines of which have long since been exhausted. Their depth of colour and light cannot be found in modern materials today.
Each vintage Art Deco engagement ring in our collection is both a piece of design history and an incredible investment in its own right.
Each antique Art Deco ring in our collection is original to its period. We do not sell “Art Deco-inspired” or modern reproductions. Every piece is meticulously sourced by our buyers and dated through its design language, hallmarks, and craftsmanship.
Where appropriate, we provide certification for our gemstones, carried out independently by trusted laboratories from around the world.
Art Deco engagement rings encapsulate an era of glamour and sophistication, which makes them the perfect choice when choosing unique vintage engagement rings. Art Deco was prominent during the 1920s–1930s, and the style is characterised by abstract designs, colours and geometric patterns and shapes. Art deco rings are still very much in demand as they are superbly unique. With a range of beautiful, colourful gems, sophisticated diamond settings and unique designs, our carefully curated selection of vintage Art Deco wedding and engagement rings offers pieces from one of the most distinctive eras in jewellery history.
Edwardian engagement rings often feature a combination of gold and platinum in their mount and setting, while Art Deco rings were created entirely in platinum. Additionally, the Edwardian period took inspiration from nature and lace, creating soft, delicate forms completely opposed to the bold modernist style of the Art Deco period, which favoured geometric, clean lines and architectural designs.
Art Deco is perhaps amongst the most recognisable styles in history. The 1920s–1930s had a huge influence on the way in which jewellery was designed, and many long-established jewellery companies, including Tiffany & Co, designed and created many of their iconic pieces during this time. Art Deco wedding rings, jewellery, and engagement rings in particular, have some characteristics which make them truly distinguishable from any other era. Vintage Art Deco engagement rings were mainly designed using white gold, yellow gold, platinum and silver and incorporated stones such as pearls, diamonds and rubies. Art Deco engagement rings also tended to use geometric shapes and settings, and you can usually spot genuine pieces by their bright, distinctive colours.
Choosing a genuine, vintage Art Deco engagement ring is important if you want a piece true to the era. Firstly, consider the style and design which you prefer,as this will make it easier to narrow down your search and find the perfect piece. It is important to take into consideration the metal used for the band, as some colours used will naturally complement different skin tones, and also any coloured stones or gems set within the band. Diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds were typically used in vintage Art Deco engagement rings, meaning that the ring itself can be particularly bright and colourful. However, Art Deco engagement rings can also be simple and elegant, depending on the style you choose, so it’s best to consider your partner’s personal style when making the critical decision.
When buying an Art Deco engagement ring, there are differing views on how much should be spent. Traditionally, a ring was to cost around three months’ salary, but the most important thing when choosing and buying an engagement ring is selecting one which your partner will love. The cost of an Art Deco engagement ring will vary depending on the style and design you choose, so it’s best to base your decision on both preference and budget.
Taking care of a vintage Art Deco engagement ring is important, as the clasps or claws which hold the diamonds or gems in place can be very delicate. The materials and stones used to create Art Deco engagement rings are typically long-lasting, with their age being evidence due to some pieces being 100 years old. Usually, they can withstand day-to-day wear, but it is best to take them off whilst doing chores or exercise. An Art Deco engagement ring is very delicate, so the best way to clean one is by simply soaking the ring in warm, soapy water for 10 minutes to dislodge any dirt or dust. It is then best to gently brush around any clasps or claws with a soft toothbrush, then gently dry and polish with a soft, dry cloth.
Art Deco rings can absolutely hold their value, but like most antique jewellery, it depends on a few key factors rather than the label alone.
The strongest pieces are those with clear period authenticity (around 1920–1940), excellent craftsmanship, and good condition. Rings featuring high-quality diamonds or gemstones such as emeralds, sapphires, or rubies, especially in original platinum settings, tend to hold value better than later reproductions or heavily altered pieces.
Originality is also key. An Art Deco emerald engagement ring, for example, is most desirable when it retains its original stone, has had minimal restoration, and carries strong design provenance.
