Ancient Roman capricorn intaglio ring. Set to centre with an oval carnelian plaque depicting capricorn as a half goat half sea creature, in a closed back rubover setting with smooth polished edges, flanked to either side by raised trumpeting shoulders featuring ridged detail, flowing to a solid tapering keeled shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 5.22g in weight, circa 3rd century AD, accompanied by a museum quality seal impression.
Rings of this overall shape have been found across the Roman Empire from Rome to Gaul, Austria to Cardiff. This ring has fine motifs with decorative details which make it a rare museum quality piece.
