Rectangle rings and jewellery have been popular for centuries, for almost as long as stone cutting has been around. Rectangle stone rings are elegant and incredibly dynamic, and have been a popular selection for people in every society throughout history, from the nobles of the Tudor court to the flappers of the 1920s. In our collection, we have everything from the Table cut rectangle diamond rings from the 1600s to vintage rectangle engagement rings.

Throughout the ages, rectangle stone rings have been popular as a token of love, or as an engagement ring. The dynamic shape of rectangle stone rings allows for a multitude of different cutting techniques, and allows the stunning natural shine and beauty of the natural stone to shine through. Rectangle diamond stones are one of the earliest types of diamond cutting and shaping, and have continued to be popular.

Rectangle stone rings are usually created by using step cuts, and often look geometric and angular. Rectangle diamond jewellery and rectangle stone rings have continued to be popular because it is an incredibly dimensional shape, allowing the inner quality of the stone to be displayed at its best. Many people describe rectangle stone rings and jewellery to have a ‘hall of mirrors’ effect, and they are renowned for their standalone shine and beauty.

Rectangle engagement rings were popular in the Tudor period, and were often diamond rings. Because Tudor jewellery was often made with Table cut diamonds (an early form of the step cut) the stones they used in jewellery were often rectangle shaped. However, the Tudors also used other semi-precious stones in their rectangle stone rings, such as rubies, sapphires and red spinel. At this time, only the nobility could afford jewellery, so Tudor jewellery such as rectangle stone rings were an indicator of wealth and power.

Although rectangle stone rings and jewellery would be sporadically popular in the centuries after the Tudor period, they went through a renewal of popularity during the Art Deco era of the 1920s. After the horrors of WWI, society wanted a change from the aesthetics and values of the past. The artistic pioneers of the time favoured geometric shapes and clean lines, meaning that rectangle rings were incredibly popular. Rectangle engagement rings from this period are some of the most highly valued pieces in vintage jewellery, and are incredibly prominent in collections of Art Deco engagement rings. Rectangle stone rings would continue to be popular after this period, and are still a popular choice for engagement rings even today.

Rectangle stone rings and jewellery have been popular for centuries, displaying the very best of diamond and precious stones’ natural qualities.
