From the 25th May to the 28th July the Design Museum is showcasing the ‘Cartier in Motion’ exhibition, celebrating the evolution of Cartier’s style and its role in the birth of the modern-day wristwatch. In the beginning of the 20th century Louis Cartier a gifted horologist and jewellery designer was at the forefront of fashion and style. Ever the socialite, his connection to Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont highlighted the unreliability and impracticalities of using a pocket watch whilst flying. This simple conversation birthed the very first gentlemen’s Cartier wristwatch dubbed the ‘Santos’. His innovation of design particularly with timepieces expanded along with the Cartier brand and created a recognisable international benchmark for superb quality and craftsmanship.
Following this extraordinary story, the Cartier in Motion exhibit includes over 170 pieces including original manuscripts, drawings by Cartier designers and timepieces from the Cartier Archives. With a focus on the 20th century obsession of motion, speed and flight there will also be a number of objets d’art on display demonstrating the artistic prowess of the Cartier family.
