Description

Ancient Roman ring with jasper lion intaglio. Set with an oval jasper intaglio of a sitting lion underneath a tree in a closed back rubover collet setting, encompassed by a fine wire border, the broad integrated shoulders highlighted with a scrolling wirework design and tapering to reverse. Tested yellow gold, approximately 5.6g in weight, circa 3rd century AD.

Lions are an enduring symbol of power, majesty and strength and have been depicted on the public buildings, statuary and the personal adornments of numerous ancient cultures through to the modern day.
