Intaglio rings were important symbols of status and personal identity in ancient Rome. This ring depicts a group of fishermen, embodying the maritime lifeblood of the empire’s coastal and riverine economies. The decorative border surrounding the intaglio is a technique known as granulation—a meticulous process of fusing tiny gold spheres onto a surface—to create intricate beaded borders and decorative accents on rings and other adornments.
