A type of setting originating in the Ancient roman era where the setter would use a sharp scorper to cut the metal round the edge of the setting and in doing so, the metal in the centre would be cut out, so the remaining edge of metal would be pushed over the stone to secure it in place. This would have taken a high level of skill, as one would have to cut the metal all in one go to stop the setting edge from appearing jagged.
