Ancient Roman jasper signet ring engraved with a grillos, 1st to 2nd century AD. A yellow gold ring set with one central oval jasper intaglio of a 'grillos' or grasshopper in a collet setting, the base of the collet encircled by twisted wire ornament, all on a flat ribbed shank.

In Ancient Greece and Rome, the god Apollo was sometimes called “grasshopper” due to his role as the defender against plagues.
