 Description

Victorian pearl and diamond cluster earrings. A matching pair, set to centre with a round natural saltwater pearl in a half-drilled open back setting, two in total, one 8.5mm x 8.6mm, the other 8.5mm x 8.8mm, encircled by ten cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back claw and grain settings, twenty in total with a combined approximate weight of 7.00 carats, to an impressive pair of cluster earrings, featuring curving claws, intricately pierced galleries and fancy shape open backholing, fitted to top with a secure hook and hinged clasp, approximately 2cm in length. Tested rose gold and silver, circa 1880, accompanied by Gem & Pearl Laboratory report #10327.

 Comments

By the mid-1800s, the dormouse design, French for “sleeper”, became increasingly popular. Initially designed as a single drop attached to a curving earwire with a simple leverback mechanism, they were very different to the pendant and girandole earrings of the previous decades.
