Introduced in 1958, the five-pointed star enclosing a hammer and sickle became the official Soviet hallmark for precious metals, replacing the earlier symbol of a worker's head. Used until 1994, the star was accompanied by a small Cyrillic letter identifying the assay office responsible for testing and certifying the metal's purity. This ring bears a discreet ‘M’ for Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union and its political and administrative centre.
