Centrally set with an oval old cut natural unenhanced Burmese sapphire in an open back claw setting with an approximate weight of 1.15 carats, encircled by an undulating row of twenty tapered baguette cut diamonds in open back claw settings with a combined approximate weight of 1.80 carats, to a ballerina cluster design, featuring curving claws, an intricately pierced gallery and fancy open backholing, flanked by raised split shoulders and flowing down to a solid D-shape tapering shank. Marked platinum and iridium, maker's mark for Oscar Heyman Brothers, numbered '19636', American, circa 1970, accompanied by Gemmological Certification Services report #5776-3639.

 Comments

The ballerina style is famously difficult to make, and can only be created by a master craftsman. The skill in creating a ‘ballerina' involves meticulous precision and exactness in the cutting and setting of the gemstones so that they lie perfectly next to each other. In this piece, the undulating row of tapered baguette cut diamonds provide a wonderful contrast to the remarkable Burmese sapphire to the centre.
