Ancient Roman intaglio of Hercules. Set with an oval blue glass intaglio, finely carved to depict Hercules standing with a wreath and lion skin, in a closed back rubover setting, flanked by broad integrated shoulders and tapering through to a solid flat shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 14.3g in weight, circa 3rd century AD.
Hercules, the divine hero is widely known as the personification of strength and courage. He is usually identified with the lion skin and his favourite weapon the club, however here he is seen with the addition of the victor's wreath.
