This ring is in fine condition, commensurate with its age.
'Rufus' was a popular Ancient Roman name which meant 'red-haired' in Latin. The engraving of a name rather than a deity or mythological figure underscores the practical and deeply personal nature of the ring, which would have functioned both as a seal for authentication and as a symbol of identity and status.

See Ruseva-Slokoska, L., 'Roman Jewellery', Sofia, 1991, item 182 for a similarly shaped ring with engraved inscription.
