In ancient Rome the helmet was an enduring emblem of Roman military prowess, discipline, and protection. The 3rd century AD was the late imperial period and was marked by heightened militarization and external threats. Given the smaller size of this ring, it is possible that it would have been worn by the wife or daughter of a Roman soldier as a memento whilst he was away from home.
