 Description

Victorian opal and diamond coronet cluster ring. Centrally set with an oval cabochon natural unenhanced opal in an open back grain setting with an approximate weight of 1.05 carats, encircled by twelve cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back grain settings with a combined approximate weight of 1.55 carats, to an elegant coronet cluster design featuring curving claws, a pierced gallery and fancy shape open backholing, leading to trumpeting shoulders with ridged details flowing through to a solid tapered D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 1890.

 Comments

Because opal has the colors of other gems, the Romans thought it was the most precious and powerful of all. This is a feature that led the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder to describe precious opals in his Natural History as if they were all the gemstones combined into one:
“This most beautiful of gems combines the fire of the ruby, the brilliant purple of amethyst, and the sea-green of emerald; all shining together in glorious and incredible union.”
