Sophisticated trade routes and delicate exchange may often fall in the shadow of Viking raids, but this museum quality artifact preserves the mark of this varied history. Wealth was stored and transferred as metal. Foreign coins only valued for their weight in silver or gold, prizing jewellery alongside it's many functional and spiritual roles as a pure currency. Bullion was also favored, from jewellery either extracted and weighed on the spot for it's value, or credibility that the item as a whole was not merely plated. Known as ‘hack silver’ or ‘hack gold', this ring embodies an intricate and cooperative side to Viking history.
