When platinum first came into use in jewellery at the turn of the twentieth century, French regulations did not yet require it to be hallmarked. By 1910, however, official control was introduced through the use of existing gold hallmarks (such as the eagle’s head seen on this ring) as the clear visual distinction between gold and platinum was considered sufficient to avoid confusion.

As demand for platinum grew and its price rose, new alloys such as white gold and palladium were developed to imitate its appearance. To distinguish these metals from platinum, three dedicated platinum hallmarks were officially introduced in France, in 1913.
