In Ancient Roman mythology Mars was the god of war. Second only to Jupiter in the Roman pantheon, Mars was revered as the divine father of Rome’s founders, Romulus and Remus, and the protector of the empire’s military might. The engraving of Mars—often depicted in a crested helmet, armed with a spear or shield—symbolised strength, discipline, and divine favour in warfare.

In Greek mythology, the god Ares is the equivalent of Mars.
