Sapphire and diamond three stone ring, of European royal provenance. Centrally set with an oval cabochon cut natural no heat sapphire in an open back claw setting with a weight of 3.38 carats, flanked by two cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back claw settings with an approximate combined weight of 1.30 carats, to an elegant three stone design featuring curving claws, a pierced gallery and open backholing, the smooth shoulders flowing through to a solid D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 1890, accompanied by accompanied by Swiss Gemmological Institute (SSEF) report #140855.

This ring was once part of the personal collection of Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria (1861-1948). Bulgaria's first modern king, in 1887 Ferdinand I was elected prince of Bulgaria and later assumed the title of Tsar in 1908 after the country gained independence from the Ottoman Empire.

He abdicated the throne in 1918 and left for Coburg, Germany, where he lived until his death in 1948. His jewellery collection, and that of the Bulgarian royal family have been passed down through the generations.
This ring is in excellent condition.
