S. Blanckensee & Son ltd sapphire and diamond gypsy ring. Set to centre with an oval old cut natural no heat sapphire in an open back rubover setting with an approximate weight of 0.70 carats, flanked by two cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back rubover settings with a combined approximate weight of 0.60 carats, to a gypsy ring design featuring a polished gallery and open circular backholing, leading to smoothly conforming shoulders which flow through to a solid shank. Marked 18 carat yellow gold, numbered '3210', maker's mark 'SB & S.Ld' for S Blanckensee & Son Ltd, full hallmarks for Birmingham, English, 1887.

S. Blanckensee & Son was founded in 1826 in Bristol by Solomon Blanckensee. Soon after he moved the firm to Birmingham, and also opened another location in Glasgow. Solomon's son Aaron joined the firm in 1865, and continued operation after his father's retirement in 1874. In 1884 another location was opened in London, at 35 Ely Place in Holborn where the produced all manner of gold and gem-set jewellery. They exhibited in a number of exhibitions, including the Health Exhibition of 1884 and the Jewellers' Exhibition of 1913.
