The total approximate diamond weight is 0.75 carats, to an elegant marquise cluster design featuring polished edges, an intricately pierced gallery and open backholing, leading to smooth shoulders with engraved scrolling motifs, flowing through to a solid D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold with platinum settings, circa 1910, accompanied by Gemmological Certification Services report #79234-49.

 Expert opinion

This sapphire has been assessed by Gemmological Certification Services as being basaltic in origin. This means it formed in or around volcanic basalt rock, crystallised in high-temperature environments associated with basalt lava flows and has higher iron content, which account for the more saturated blue colour. Basaltic sapphire deposits include Siam, Australia, and Southeast Asia amongst others.

 Comments

The marquise shape is a soft oval with a stretched point at each end, although there can be a wide variety of proportions from almost ‘spiky’ thin marquises to ‘fat’ rounder shapes. Another name for the marquise cut is ‘navette’, French for ‘little boat’ as it echoes the smooth outline of a ship’s hull.
