A matching pair, each set to top with three round cut unenhanced sapphires in settings, six in total, with a combined approximate weight of 1.80 , suspending three shape in open back rubover settings, six in total, with a combined weight of 0.90 carats, further adorned by twelve round diamonds in settings, twenty-four in total, with a combined weight of 0.25 carats and each terminating in one natural unenhanced sapphire in a suspended closed back setting, two in total, with a combined approximate weight of 10.00 carats. The total combined approximate diamond weight is 1.15 carats, to an elegant pair of drop earrings, flowing with movement, featuring edges, linear pierced galleries and open backholing, fitted to reverse with a secure post and butterfly, approximately 4cm in length. , 1915.

Director's Notes

The piece has been assessed by our in house gemmologist. The sapphires most likely to originate from the old mines of Ceylon.

The ‘drop’ or ‘pear’ shape cut of gemstone is unusual and rare.

The first form of the drop shape, the ‘pendeloque’ or ‘briolette’ was invented by a Flemish cutter, Lodewyk van Berquem as early as the 1400s. He is also credited with the discovery of the diamond polishing wheel which allowed him to polish facets and thus better optimise light reflection and ‘sparkle’ within a diamond- a defining moment in the history of diamond cutting.

These earrings set with drop shape sapphires are remarkably exceptional, as both sapphires have been perfectly matched in colour and cut, making this a rare collector's piece.
