Victorian diamond crescent moon brooch. Set with twenty-three cushion shape old mine diamonds in open back cut down settings with a combined approximate weight of 9.90 carats, to an impressive crescent moon design featuring cut down settings, a finely pierced gallery and open backholing and fitted to reverse with a removable hinged pin and scroll clasp, brooch approximately 4cm in diameter. Tested gold and silver, marked '24', circa 1890.

Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances in the sphere of astronomy and cosmology. The appearance of the Great Comets of 1843 and 1882 that remained for months burning in the skies above England contributed to the Victorian fascination with heavenly bodies. Celestial designs were a common feature in jewellery during this era, with stars, crescents, and sunbursts playing into the relatively new fascination for the science of cosmology.
