 Description

Post Medieval posy ring 'PRIES. P. NOTRE. DAME. DE. CADEROT'. A flat gold band carved to the exterior 'PRIES. P. NOTRE. DAME. DE. CADEROT' translated from French as 'Pray for our Lady Caderot', bordered by a fine raised ridge around the full circumference, approximately 2.2mm in width. Tested gold, approximately 0.58 grams in weight, circa 17th-18th century AD.

The religious posy 'Pray for our Lady Caderot' origins can be traced to a important pilgrimage site the Notre Dame Chapel of Caderot located in Provence, France. It was thought that the chapel held a most sacred relic, a crystal bowl which held the hairs of the Virgin Mary. During the 16th century the chapel suffered damage and in some areas devastating destruction due to the raging Wars of Religion. Although the chapel was considered destroyed, it was rebuilt in the 17th century. Today the chapel continues to be a sacred pilgrimage site and a popular tourist attraction.
