 Description

Medieval sapphire and emerald ring. Set to centre with a hexagonal cabochon natural sapphire in a closed back rubover setting with an approximate weight of 2.30 carats, further set with three round cabochon natural emeralds in closed back rubover settings with an approximate combined weight of 0.15 carats, to an impressive cluster design featuring polished edges, a smooth gallery and closed backholing, leading to broad integrated shoulders with ridged detail and flowing through to a solid flat shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 1200-1500.

Accompanied by documentation stating that this piece was found whilst metal detecting grassland in Aldfield area of Harrogate in April 2021. It is recorded under the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference SWYOR-A52E73.

This type of setting, with a central stone, and smaller stones in separate simple collets came into fashion in the 13th century, and continued to be seen in jewellery until the 15th century.
