Medieval gold ring with turquoise. Centrally set with a cabochon natural unenhanced turquoise in a closed back rubover setting with an approximate weight of 0.10 carats, to a pie-dish bezel and leading through to a solid rounded gold shank, approximately 1.7mm width. Tested yellow gold, approximately 2.6g in weight, circa 13th century.

This ring came from a collection in the Netherlands.
This ring is in fine condition commensurate with its age, but would require some care when being worn.
The Nishapur region of Persia (currently Iran) and the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) were the two major historical sources of turquoise. The Sinai mines were largely depleted in ancient times, so it is likely that this turquoise is of Persian origin, brought back to Europe during the crusades.
