The Ballerina Cluster Design

The birth of the ballerina cluster design

Throughout history, jewellery design has taken inspiration from themes in both nature and society. The ballerina cluster design became popular in the 1960’s when there was a desire for a new striking ring.

The ballerina cluster is an eye catching and distinctive design which took inspiration from the ballet and the shape was inspired to resemble the tutu of a ballerina. This design more often than not features to the centre a single gemstone of any shape or size which is encircled by an undulating row of baguette cut diamonds. These diamonds simulate the flowing movement of the ballerina dancing, creating an elegant swirling effect on the finger which is unlike any other.

This design was favoured by some of the most prestigious of jewellery houses such as Tiffany & Co, Boucheron and Oscar Heyman Brothers. The design can only be created by a master craftsman, as the skill in creating a ‘ballerina' involves meticulous precision and exactness in the cutting and setting of the gemstones to lie perfectly next to each other.
