Viking gold marriage knot ring. A yellow gold ring, composed of a single rounded gold wire, a finely worked knot to center and flanked to each side by a tightly wound coil of wire. Tested yellow gold, approximately 3.77g in weight, circa 9th-11th century.
This ring is a fine example of Viking craftsmanship with a labyrinthine ring design formed from a single gold wire. This knot is a single reef knot- a knot which has its origins in the ancient world and has been in use for over four thousand years. Its purpose is to tie together the two ends of a single rope- making it a perfect symbol of the union of marriage with two people tying their lives together.
