Medieval silver gilt ring with griffin. A silver gilt ring, the central circular plaque engraved with the image of a griffin, flanked by a trefoil cluster of gold granules to the shoulders and set on a slim rounded shank. Tested silver, approximately 1.9g in weight, circa 12th-13th century.
The griffin, a creature with upper half of the body an eagle, the lower of a lion, was a frequent image seen in heraldry where it symbolises watchfulness and courage.
