 Description

Gold posy ring 'Hearts united live contented'. A smoothly conforming solid D-shape band, engraved to the interior in italic script 'Hearts united live Contented', approximately 3.6mm in width. Tested yellow gold, approximately 6.2 grams in weight, maker's mark 'R' within a square punchmark, circa 18th century.

This posy was a favorite choice and further examples of this posy -with various spellings- are recorded in Joan Evans' comprehensive catalogue of posy mottos 'English Posies and Posy Rings', 1931, p.47. This maker's mark is not listed in 'London Goldsmiths 1697-1837 Their Marks & Lives', Grimwade, Arthur G., 1976.
