Description

Ruby set watch by Cartier. An extremely rare watch by Cartier, set with sixteen round old cut rubies in claw settings of varying sizes with an approximate combined weight of 4.00 carats, four flanking the central face and the remaining twelve set within protruding petal shape sculptural collets on a curving structured bezel, six to either side elegantly tapering outwards and framing the central semi-cylindrical glass watch face with black numerals, black lettering 'CARTIER' and two hands, to a yellow gold setting, fitted to reverse with a top wind movement and flanked by hinged articulated bars. Further set with an articulated graduating rectangular link chain, flowing smoothly with the wrist to a secure bar clasp. Marked 18 carat yellow gold, maker's mark, numbered '43658 A', '8657', French, circa 1941, accompanied by Cartier box.

This piece is catalogued in 'Le Temps De Cartier' by J.Barracca, G.Negretti, F.Nencini, page 230 and is typical of Cartier's naturalistic styling in this period.
