Throughout the 19th century, British astronomers made many advances in the sphere of astronomy and cosmology. The appearance of the Great Comets of 1843 and 1882 that remained for months burning in the sky above England contributed to the Victorian fascination with heavenly bodies. Celestial designs were a common feature in jewellery during this era, with stars, crescents, and sunbursts playing into the relatively new fascination for the science of cosmology.
