Ancient Roman ring with ornate gold work. A yellow gold ring in the style of a Roman shield boss, set centrally with a circular rubbed garnet in a closed back rubover setting within a domed circle with ornate granulation and scrolling wirework throughout, flanked to either side by a tapering cluster of gold pellets and flowing smoothly down to a solid ridged flat section shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 4th century AD.
This is a museum quality ring, and a very fine example of Ancient Roman craftsmanship, showcasing several highly technical goldworking techniques.
