Ancient Roman jasper signet ring of Mercury. Horizontally set to centre with one oval green jasper intaglio in a closed back Roman set setting engraved with a full length figure of Mercury with purse and staff, to a signet ring design featuring a ribbed wire border and closed backholing, leading to integrated shoulders and flowing through to a tapering half-round shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 7.05 grams in weight, circa 1st-2nd century AD.
In Roman mythology Mercury was the messanger god, with the Greek equivalent known as Hermes. This ring is in fine condition with an attractive patina.
