Description

Ancient Roman jasper signet ring of Mercury. Horizontally set to centre with one oval green jasper intaglio in a closed back rubover setting engraved with a full length figure of Mercury with purse and staff, to a signet ring design featuring a ribbed wire border and closed backholing, leading to integrated shoulders and flowing through to a tapering half-round shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 1st to 2nd century AD.

In Roman mythology Mercury was the messanger god, with the Greek equivalent known as Hermes.
