Description

Ancient Roman garnet wolf intaglio ring. Set with an oval cabochon garnet intaglio with a finely engraved image of a wolf, in a closed back rubover collet setting, to smoothly integrated shoulders which taper through to a D-shape shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 2.8g in weight, circa 1st-2nd century.

Wolves were sacred to the gods Apollo and Mars, and a symbol of Rome as the mythical founders of the city, Romulus and Remus, were protected by a wolf in their infancy.
