Ancient Roman cornelian signet ring. Horizontally set with a single oval cornelian plaque in a rubover setting featuring an engraved full length male figure, probably Mars, the Roman god of war, a marquise shape bezel and closed backholing, leading to trumpeting shoulders and flowing through to a hollow shank. Tested yellow gold, circa 2nd century AD.
In Greek mythology, the god Ares is the equivalent of Mars.
