Inspired by the domed forms of Rome’s classical and Renaissance architecture, the Trombino design is characterised by a prominent central gemstone framed by graduating tapered baguette-cut diamonds. The sculptural bombé shoulders and intricately pierced galleries, frequently adorned with closely set brilliant-cut diamonds, lend the design a magnbificent sense of volume. Among its most celebrated admirers was Elizabeth Taylor, whose famous Bulgari Trombino ring, centred on a sugarloaf cabochon sapphire, was gifted to her by Richard Burton during their famous romance. Particularly fashionable during the 1960s through to the 1980s, the Trombino embodied Bulgari’s confident approach to generous proportions and bold design, becoming a favourite among Hollywood stars and the international elite. Today, the Trombino remains one of the Roman maison’s most recognisable creations.
