During and just following the reformation, royalists who wanted to memorialise King Charles I (1600 - 1649) wore jewellery with his initials, a crown or a likeness of him. Often set under rock crystal, they became known as Stuart crystals. Popular until the end of the period, this style of ring was soon used in memorial jewellery and, in rarer cases as tokens of love or wedding jewels.

This category of Stuart crystals display imagery such as cupid holding a bow and arrows, knots, flowers and hearts. It is highly likely that this ring, showcasing a love knot was given as a promise or betrothal ring to a sweetheart around 400 years ago.
