Chinese art was an important influence on Art Deco jewellery, inspiring the use of jade, lacquer and coral alongside motifs such as dragons, clouds and stylised foliage. Many fine jewellery houses including Cartier, Marcus & Co., and of course, J. E. Caldwell, incorporated intricately carved Chinese-style jade plaques into striking platinum designs, contrasting their rich green colour and traditional craftsmanship with the geometric brilliance of diamonds.
