Post Medieval 'A minde content cannot repent'. A smoothly conforming band, to the interior in italic script 'A minde content cannot repent', approximately 5.00mm in width. yellow , makers mark 'H', approximately 5.83 grams in weight, 17th century.

Although the maker's mark is not identifiable in any standard works of reference, it has been recorded on several 17th century rings in the British Museum Collection. For another posy ring with this maker's mark see museum number Af.824, 1961,1202.32.

Provenance

This ring was unearthed in the parish of Baghurst, Hampshire by a metal detectorist in 2024. It is recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference Hamp-DCB9BA and disclaimed under the Treasure Act ref: 2024 T581.

Condition

This ring has been found in good condition, commensurate with its age.

Chairman's Notes

The posy inscribed in the band of the ring can be found recorded twice in Joan Evans' 1931 / English Posies and Posy Rings, with different spellings (A mind content cannot repent and A mind content canot repent). The discovery of this ring marks a third way of spelling this particular posy.

In early posy rings the inscription was written in Norman French, with French, Latin and English used in later centuries. The posies were originally written on the outside, moving to the hidden inside of the band from the mid 16th Century onwards.
