Palladium belongs to the platinum group of metals, alongside platinum and iridium, both of which have also been used extensively in jewellery. Although jewellers had experimented with palladium earlier in the 20th century, its use became more established during the 1930s and 1940s, particularly in Britain and America.
During the Second World War, platinum was designated a strategic resource due to its importance to the war effort, and restrictions on its use encouraged jewellers to turn to palladium as an alternative.
