Director's Notes

The outer band of this ring bears a French horse's head assay mark, introduced in 1838 to indicate gold articles assayed outside Paris. Until 1919, French gold hallmarks differed according to the location of the assay office: the eagle's head was used for articles assayed in Paris, while the horse's head identified those assayed in regional offices.

In 1919, the horse's head hallmark was discontinued, and the eagle's head became the standard French guarantee mark for all gold articles assayed throughout France, regardless of the assay office.
