Art Nouveau Jewellery

Between 1890 and 1910, beautiful jewellery was produced in the Art Nouveau style. With a myriad of inspiration, from archaeology to nature, these pieces are characterised by their organic forms and sensuous designs.

With yellow gold used as a backdrop, different enamelling techniques can be seen, in particular plique-a-jour enamel was favoured for creating these jewels, which allowed the light shine through the piece as in stained glass.

Diamonds and gemstones were still used, although mainly as accent stones with more organic materials used to compliment the designs. Natural motifs, such as the female form and mythical creatures all graced these jewels, as did those from architecture. Gothic and classical revivals both featured in Art Nouveau jewellery.
