Medieval love ring. Set to centre with a unenhanced sapphire in a setting, flanked by two heart shape red stones, possibly , in closed back recessed settings, to an impressive love ring featuring curving claws, a polished and closed backholing, leading to trumpeting and flowing through to a solid , flattened opposite the and to the exterior 'IhC' in blackletter script. yellow , English, 1350-1550AD.

Accompanied by documentation from the Portable Antiquities Scheme stating that this ring was found whilst metal detecting near Wisbech, Norfolk, in January 2020. It is recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference number NMS-71D15D.

Chairman's Notes

This ring is a highly unusual design, with no direct comparison found in other museums/collections. The Christogram engraved to the back (IhC, meaning 'Jesus'), along with the hear motifs and gemstone choice would suggest the ring had an ecclesiastical or devotional significance within the Christian faith. Sapphires were commonly seen on rings worn by the clergy and were often associated with truth. This ring is of a smaller finger size, which would suggest it was worn on a female hand.
