Set to centre with a round pink topaz in a setting with an approximate weight of 7.70 , encircled by two rows of seed pearls in settings, sixty-four in total, all to a brooch design featuring green guilloché enamelling and open and closed backholing, fitted to reverse with a secure hinged pin and scroll clasp and removable bail to top, approximately 2.5cm in diameter. yellow , 1890.

Director's Notes

Following the discovery of topaz deposits in Brazil in the 18th century, topaz became a highly sought-after gemstone during the Victorian period. Prized for its beautiful colour and romantic symbolism, pink topaz was considered a symbol of femininity and romance, associated with matters of the heart.

While pink topaz does exist in nature, it is very rare and mostly pale in color. In order to improve the hue, pink topaz would typically be set in closed-back settings with a foil backing to intensify the colour. The topaz in this brooch is particularly remarkable, as it exhibits a strong pink hue without the need for any backing.
