French Cut Rings & Jewellery

Discover Our Collection of French Cut Rings & Jewellery

The origins of french cut diamond rings can be traced all the way back to the 1300s. It is believed that the name of the cut derives from the cut being the most popular in France. French cut diamonds progressed from the Table cut, which is widely considered to be one of the first examples of faceted diamonds in history. French cut diamond rings are timelessly elegant and have been a classic jewellery piece for centuries.

The French cut progressed from the traditional Point cut, adding four more corner facets to the crown area. Diamond cutters experimented with the French cut for over three centuries, eventually creating the classic french cut diamond rings that we are familiar with today. The french cut diamond is often easier to create than other stone cuts, however, the light reflection of it can produce spectacular results. French cut diamond rings are often extremely dazzling and opulent.

French cut diamond rings look incredibly stunning, and truly display the prowess of past diamond cutters. The most noticeable feature of the french cut diamond ring is its square appearance when viewed from above and has just nine crown facets. The design of the stone creates an optical illusion of a four pointed star when looking from the top. The reflections play with natural light well, producing a sophisticated display of light.

While french cut diamond rings have been popular for hundreds of years, their popularity escalated massively during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s. During this period, taste and artistic expression diverted massively from previous time periods. Futuristic, geometric designs aimed to represent the changing political landscape. The french cut diamond ring had a rectangular shape, emulating Art Deco style's ethos perfectly. Our art deco engagement rings collection has many examples of vintage French cut diamond rings.
