 Description

Georgian ruby and emerald mandolin brooch/pendant locket. A yellow, rose and green gold brooch/pendant in the form of a mandolin, a symbol of harmony in love, the front and reverse decorated with engraved floral and foliate motifs in rose and green gold respectively on a yellow gold dappled ground, the front of the body of the mandolin rimmed with nine cushion shape old mine natural unenhanced rubies in closed back claw settings with an approximate total weight of 1.00 carats, interspersed with nine cushion shape old mine natural emeralds with no colour enhancement in closed back claw settings with an approximate total weight of 1.00 carats, with wire strings, the reverse with a hinged pressure fit bead latch which opens to reveal an oval glass compartment, the reverse set with a secure hinged pin and scroll latch, all suspended from a double belcher chain on a circular ribbed bale. Tested gold, circa 1830.
