 Description

Purple star sapphire and diamond ring by J. Milhening Inc. Set to centre with an oval cabochon natural unenhanced purple Ceylon star sapphire in an open back rubover setting with an approximate weight of 10.50 carats, further set to one side with five rectangular baguette cut diamonds in open back half rubover settings with a combined approximate weight of 0.20 carats, further adorned with ten round old cut diamonds in open back grain settings with a combined weight of 0.35 carats. The total approximate diamond weight is 0.55 carats, to an elegant dress ring with asymmetric design featuring polished edges, engraved detailing o the gallery and open backholing, leading to trumpeting raised split shoulders and flowing through to a solid D-shape shank. Marked platinum and iridium, maker's mark for J. Milhening Inc., American, circa 1935, accompanied by Gemmological Certification Services report #78156-02.

 Comments

The firm of J. Milhening Inc. was known for their platinum and diamond jewellery.  They operated out of Chicago, Illinois and Auburn Heights, Michigan between 1909 and 1973.

Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is often referred to as the jewel box of the Indian Ocean, and has produced some of the finest star gemstones in existence.

Commonly used as talismans to protect against the evil eye, the Sinhalese used star sapphires to ward off witchcraft of all kinds. To others, the crossing of three bands of light represented hope, faith and destiny, and it was believed that these gems would protect travellers from ill health. Flemish mineralogist, Anselmus de Boodt, wrote in 1609 that the Germans revered star sapphires as a siegsten, “victory stone”, and they are still occasionally referred to as this today.
