Jabel was founded in 1916 by Jack J. Abelson in Newark, New Jersey, which was then the jewellery manufacturing centre of the United States.

In the earliest years of the company Jabel produced only rings. The company introduced the "illusion setting", which appeared to enhance the size as well as the brilliance of the stone. Still family owned, today Jabel produces a full line of jewellery which includes, in addition to rings, necklaces, bracelets, and brooches.
