Hercules, the divine hero is widely known as the personification of strength and courage. The scene on this ring depicts Hercules' first labor, the slaying of the Nemean Lion, a symbol of his superhuman endurance and triumph over chaos as the lion could not be killed by mortal weapons. After wrestling the beast to death, Hercules wore its impenetrable skin as a cape, one of his most distinctive attribute. Hera later placed the lion among the stars as the constellation Leo. Such imagery resonated deeply in ancient Greek and later Hellenistic culture, where Hercules was revered as both a mortal hero and a divine protector.
